FAQs

  • Hydropower can be made to 'not harm fish' but that still involves tight screening which causes issues with poor escape velocities - fish getting entrained onto the screens; debris build-up, water quality and oxygenation issues, noise disturbances and vibrations, flood lighting, culverts... the list goes on.

In reality it’s not just the fish, it's all the aquatic harmony of the riverine system that gets disturbed!

Ultimately, we believe Fish Friendly Hydropower implies all the right qualities that are benign to the entire ecosystem and that others have struggled to achieve to be truly friendly to fish.

  • Having any dam/impoundment in the river is inherently not fish friendly. Yes, you can build a fish pass, but it's not ideal for fish migrating.

The PicoStream turbine works as a floating barrel, so it causes no obstruction or impoundment. It’s affordable and accessible, easy to install and doesn’t require lengthy permitting.

  • At this scale, the majority of rivers where this turbine will be installed run continuously throughout the year. It will generate power all year round, 24/7, unlike solar which is intermittent throughout the day and year, and wind which is equally vulnerable to daily fluctuating conditions.

A 1000 watt PicoStream has a very high power capacity and produces the same amount of electricity in a year as a 40 solar panel array or a 4kW wind turbine!

  • Installation takes less than 4 hours.

  • You only need to inform the DNO through a simple form downloaded from the internet.

  • A minimum of 0.5m is required for the turbine to float and function properly.

  • A minimum of 1.10m is required to fit the turbine. We will further develop our technologies to fit smaller sites.

  • As a company, we feel the location of our manufacturing/fabrication processes are very important.

We have two initial fabrication companies based in the UK. One company based in the Midlands and the other in the South East.

  • Henry Reily-Collins and Sam Maitland lead a diverse team who believe in challenging the status quo. We are passionate about influencing change through environmentally friendly hydropower technologies.
